Audience: importers, distributors, DIY-store brands, and repacking companies that want to sell wallpaper glue powder under their own name instead of reselling someone else's brand.
This guide covers the procurement side of OEM and private-label wallpaper glue: what the two models mean, what you must specify before production, and how to protect your brand in the process. We (Hangzhou KARN New Building Materials Co., Ltd.) do OEM and private-label packing ourselves, so the checklist below is the one we work from — you can test it against any supplier.
1. OEM vs private label: the words buyers actually use
These terms overlap, and different suppliers mean slightly different things. The practical distinction:
- OEM (original equipment manufacturer) / contract packing: the factory produces and packs the product to your specification, typically with your label and your packaging design. You may or may not have a registered brand yet.
- Private label / white label: a retailer, distributor, or importer sells a product under its own brand. "White label" often implies a stock formula with your label on it; "private label" is the same idea — your brand on a product made for you.
For wallpaper glue powder the real work is the same: you bring the brand, we bring the formula, the packing line, and the documents. The important thing is to agree in writing on which of these you mean, because it changes who owns the artwork and the COA.
2. What you can customize
On a wallpaper glue powder private-label project, these are the levers:
- Pack size: 200 g / 300 g / 500 g / 1 kg and custom sizes. Retail packs of 200 g–500 g dominate DIY markets; 1 kg suits contractor packs.
- Pouch / packaging format: laminated pouch, paper box, carton; structure matched to the wallcovering you target.
- Label and carton artwork: your brand name, bilingual or multilingual instructions, barcode.
- Formula / viscosity profile: models are available from an ordinary-grade 38,000 mPa·s (K6, tapioca) up to a 60,000 mPa·s potato-starch main export model (999) and an anti-mold grade (999+); the raw-material grade KN-999 is a high-viscosity base for repacking. Target viscosity and workability can be adjusted for your market on a project basis.
- Mixing and coverage instructions printed on the pack (e.g., mix 1:25 or 1:30 with cold water; reference coverage about 25–30 m² per 200 g on standard non-woven — note it depends on wallpaper and wall condition).
3. The sample approval flow (do not skip it)
Every private-label project should pass through sample approval before bulk production:
- Request a test sample on your target wallpaper type.
- Apply it vertically to check initial tack and slip (does the panel stay or slide?).
- Check working time and dry feel with your installer.
- Approve the label/artwork proof together with the product sample.
- Only then schedule bulk production and packing.
The approved sample becomes the reference for batch acceptance. Ask for the COA of the approved sample and keep it — it is the baseline for comparing later batches.
4. Documents you need to protect your brand
For any import into a target country, collect:
- Per-batch COA with full viscosity test conditions (concentration, instrument, rotor, rpm) — not just a number;
- TDS with mixing ratio, open time, and shelf life;
- MSDS / SDS;
- Packing list and pre-shipment photos;
- Export documents (invoice, packing list, COA) to hand to your forwarder.
We supply COA/TDS/MSDS and export files, and can arrange pre-shipment photos and bilingual shipping marks.
Compliance note: import requirements differ by country and product classification. Confirm current certification and registration rules with your customs broker or local authority for your specific destination — do not rely on a supplier's general claims. We will not claim certifications we cannot document.
5. Procurement checklist — questions to ask any factory
- Do you supply 20 kg bulk raw material as well as small OEM packs? (Many brands start with 20 kg bulk and repack locally.)
- What is your standard packing: 20 kg kraft paper bag with inner PE liner?
- Which pack sizes can you run (200 g / 300 g / 500 g / 1 kg / custom)?
- Do you support label/carton artwork and multilingual instructions?
- What is the sample approval flow before bulk production?
- Can you ship to my forwarder's warehouse in China (FOB/EXW)?
- What documents do you provide per batch (COA/TDS/MSDS, packing list, photos)?
6. From bulk to your own brand: one common path
A frequent route we see with distributors:
- Import 20 kg bulk bags (moisture-protected with PE liner).
- Repack into 200 g–500 g sachets under your own brand locally.
- Print mixing instructions in the local language.
- Use the factory COA/TDS as your base document set.
This keeps shipping cost per kilo low and gives you full control of the retail pack. If you prefer factory-packed small packs, that is the OEM route in Section 2.
FAQ
What is the difference between OEM and private label for wallpaper glue?
In practice both mean "your brand on a product made and packed for you." OEM / contract packing emphasizes producing to your specification; private label / white label emphasizes selling under your own brand. Agree in writing which one you mean — it decides who owns artwork and the COA.
What pack sizes can I get under private label?
Common retail sizes are 200 g, 300 g, 500 g, and 1 kg, plus custom sizes. Small packs suit DIY retail; 1 kg suits contractor use.
Can the formula be adjusted for my market?
On a project basis, target viscosity and workability can be adjusted. KARN has models from an ordinary-grade 38,000 mPa·s tapioca product to a 60,000 mPa·s potato-starch main export model and an anti-mold grade, plus a high-viscosity raw-material base for repacking. Confirm with a sample test.
How do I approve samples before a bulk order?
Request a test sample, apply it vertically on your target wallpaper to check tack and slip, confirm working time with your installer, approve the artwork proof together with the product sample, then schedule production. The approved sample is your batch baseline.
What documents should come with a private-label batch?
Per-batch COA with full viscosity test conditions, TDS, MSDS/SDS, packing list, and pre-shipment photos, plus export documents for your forwarder.
Can I start with 20 kg bulk and repack locally instead of factory small packs?
Yes. Many distributors import 20 kg bulk bags (kraft paper with inner PE liner) and repack into retail sachets under their own brand locally. Both routes are available.
How do I get a quotation for an OEM project?
Contact us with your target market, pack size, estimated volume, and wallpaper mix. We respond with a written quotation for your specific project — price and MOQ are quoted per project, not published as fixed numbers.
