EN 233 is a European standard for finished wallcoverings in roll form, not a product standard for wallpaper adhesive powder. When a project or customer specifies EN 233, importers need to separate two questions: whether the finished wallcovering complies with EN 233, and which technical documents the adhesive supplier can provide. Hangzhou KARN is a wallpaper adhesive powder manufacturer and can provide TDS, MSDS, COA and sample information per order. This page does not claim that Hangzhou KARN or any adhesive product holds EN 233 certification.
What EN 233 actually covers
EN 233 applies to finished wallpapers, wallcoverings and plastic wallcoverings in roll form. It does not directly specify the composition, viscosity or environmental limits of wallpaper adhesive powder. So when a supplier says "we comply with EN 233", first confirm whether they mean the finished wallcovering, the adhesive, or the full installation system. Each claim needs different evidence.
Four document groups importers should verify
- EN 233 report for the finished wallcovering: issued for the specific wallcovering model and batch by the wallcovering producer or project specifier.
- TDS (technical data sheet): model, viscosity test conditions, mixing ratio and application notes for the adhesive.
- MSDS (safety data sheet): handling, storage and transport safety information for the relevant product.
- COA (certificate of analysis): relates to the sample or production batch named in the document, used for incoming inspection.
These documents answer different questions and cannot replace each other. An adhesive TDS or COA is not evidence of EN 233 compliance for the finished wallcovering.
Verification order when a project specifies EN 233
- Confirm with the project party whether EN 233 applies to the finished wallcovering, the installation system, or the adhesive.
- Request an EN 233 report that matches the project model and verify it with the issuing organization.
- Request the adhesive TDS, applicable MSDS and confirmed-batch COA from the adhesive supplier.
- Check that mixing ratio, open time and application conditions match the wallcovering supplier's installation instructions.
- Keep the report, sample identifier, batch and packaging version for incoming and after-sales review.
VOC, formaldehyde and REACH are not EN 233
VOC, formaldehyde release and REACH are separate requirements for different markets. An EN 233 report does not automatically prove VOC or REACH compliance, and the reverse is also true. If the destination market or project has separate VOC, formaldehyde or REACH requirements, request the specific documents and test reports, then verify them with the issuer. Do not infer one conclusion from another document.
Common mistakes
- Treating a plant-starch ingredient as an environmental certification.
- Treating the letters "EN 233" on a supplier page as a product test report.
- Using a report for another model or factory as evidence for this order.
- Using a COA in place of a TDS or MSDS.
